Why do people place their poker chips on top of their 2 dealt cards? Like I see some people put maybe a stack of 5 chips on top of their 2 dealt cards after they’ve looked at them why?
The players will place chips on their cards so the dealer or another player may not accidental push or pull them into the muck (or the discarded cards). Some dealers may sweep the cards too quickly and accidental grab a live hand.
As others mention, it’s to protect their cards. However, many don’t use chips for this, since (if they should accidentally roll into the play area), it might be mistaken for a bet or get mixed into the pot. Instead, they use some other item like a figurine or small paperweight that couldn’t be mistaken for chips.
They are protecting their hand, in case someone throws their cards on top of their 2 cards. Or protecting them from the dealer grabbing them and putting them in the muck (this happens to people sitting in the seats right next to the dealer more often than other seats)

Estelle Denis moves all-in and the dealer folded her hand by mistake. She (supposedly) had pocket Aces.
If she had protected her hand by placing a chip on top, this wouldn’t have happened.
its called protecting their cards look at this years wsop that short stack lady did not protect her cards and the dealer assumptuated that she was mucking and he folded her hand by mistake
