Considering that I have only moderate knowledge of how the internet works, I understand that poker websites such as partypoker and PKR probably have a room somewhere with a load of computers transfering information back and forth, and obviously they hire IT staff to run it, and helpline staff, as well as internet security staff to make sure no one cheats or hacks the website. But if you where going to set up a poker website what would be your first steps?

1short answer is that if your asking the question – then definately dont try to setup a poker room … even a white label / skin on a network
In order to build a sucessful skin of a poker room – ignoring the IT logistics – you would need somwhere in the region of $1m just for the marketing budget to even stand a chance of making it
There are literally 1000’s of poker rooms online – across maybe 12 networks that would be worth working with (and many more that arent worth bothering with)
if you find any other “turnkey” type poker room offers – run a mile
They’ll either be out and out scams or they will be selling you a skin / white label on a wholly unsucessful network with near zero players.
With a skin solution there ARE some good ones who handle pretty much all the IT / logistical issues and day to day running of the poker room – but they will want to know that you / your company has decent funds (eg. something approaching $1m at least in backup) for marketing your new site and making it a successful addition to their network – if they’re not worried how well sorted you are – then they wont be any good.
In terms of setting up a poker room from scratch / software / IT etc – that is a whole different ball park figure and will be well over $1m
might not be the answer you were looking for – I’m assuming you wanted a poker room setup as a business
if you just wanted an online table for you to play with your friends – most sites will happily setup private games for you if you contact support – some have easy setup in a private tournament lobby

2Just get the software and upload it to a host. The software is not public so you will probably have to code your own.
The server runs the game and you need to put a client on your website that users can use, I recommend embedding a poker flash client.

4I wouldn’t do that because of all those computers transferring information back and forth.
I would rather search for white label poker solutions, that is joining already existing poker network with your own brand name.
