I’m 16, and I’m having a poker night for me and a few of my friends, after which they will be staying the night. Do you have any suggestions, like whether betting with real money is a good idea, or which movies we can watch after we finish playing, or which poker games you recommend?

1my teenage boys play………….no girls allowed………..they each bring something secrete in a paper bag………a Mc Donalds coupon /a funny hat / a joke written out / a candy bar / etc. They play Texas holdem all night……the last “man” standing gets all the loot. I get them nuts/soda/popcorn/and pizza. We bought a piece of hunter green felt to just toss it over a table and invested in a poker chip set. You can get them anywhere very reasonable.

2Well, it depends on what kind of people your friends are. Some people hate losing alot, and especially around money. I like betting with poker chips or when I can’t find any I use pretzels. Also, Texas Hold ‘Em is my favorite, but that’s because I’m from Texas. Blackjack is good and simple. Pick some movies that are action based so you can have them as background noise.
Lots of food.

3depends if everyone wants to burn a few bucks, a good way me and my buds had fun was to play a poker tourney for a dollar buy in, can be fun and loose, but there is also a little something on the line, any poker games can be fun, just see what everyone knows how to play, and play everything, a good poker movie to watch is rounders.

4I dont think betting real money would be a problem if you kept the stakes low. It is very easy to become addicted to things like this. If you think that anyone has a gambling problem or the beginning of a gambling problem you should not play for money

5You’ve already received a lot of good advice, but I’ll share a few thoughts.
I don’t agree with one of the responders who suggested Blackjack as a good game for a poker night. The problem is that Blackjack is played as individuals against the dealer, whereas poker is played with everyone competing for one pot.
Personally, I don’t care for Texas Hold’em for a couple reasons. I prefer stud games (5-card and 7-card), where you see some of each person’s cards. What you see, plus the betting gives you more information to decipher as you try to decide whether you want to bet on your own hand. In Texas Hold’em, you have only the betting to tell you what other people have. And if they don’t know what they’re doing, the betting can be random, so that it’s more a game of luck than of skill.
My poker group plays dealer’s choice. Each player deals in turn and decides the game for that deal. A few common games are:
5-card stud (1 down and 4 up, betting after each up card)
7-card stud (2 down, 4 up, 1 down, betting after each up card and after the last card)
5-card draw
low hole (7-card stud, but each player’s lowest down card is wild (along with any cards that match it)
The 7-card games can be played as “high-low,” meaning that two winner split the pot (whoever can make the highest hand, and whoever can make the lowest hand; sometimes one person gets both by selecting different cards to compete in the two parts of the pot)
I would repeat the warning about keeping the stakes low. Usually this means limiting the maximum bet (e.g., to 50 cents), and also limiting the number of raises (e.g., to 3) in each round of betting.
Good luck! Have fun!
