How do you go from a “hey I am playing for fun..it’s ok if I lose” attitude to being a serious poker player? With the carefree attitude I sometimes find myself making bad decisions when I know what the correct play may be.
The very first and most important bit of advice I could supply is this: play only in games and with the amount of money where losing will not affect you. You can not afford desperation or even discomfort with the kind of risks that are sometimes warranted.
If others in a game pick up on your discomfort, they will become aggressive and try to force you off hands, and they will likely succeed.
Beyond that, play a patient style, content to fold much more often than not, and be ready to play aggressively when you do play. Most importantly, spend your time at the table studying the people around you. Try to connect their verbal and non-verbal communications with their actions and store that information for later.
Best of luck!
If you really want to become a successful poker player I would first suggest taking full advantage of every promotion given by the poker sites. These sites often offer deals worth hundreds of dollars that most people don’t even know about.
One promotion that almost no one knows about is rakeback. Rakeback is a life long promotion given by most sites which gives players a percentage of their rake back. Rake is the money taken by the casino as a charge for playing. I get 27% of my rakeback from Full Tilt Poker which earns me an extra $1000 a month for free! In order to sign up for a rakeback program you must go through an affiliate site. No poker sites offer it directly. I use a site http://www.fullofpoker.com but there are many sites out there.
-you have to be able to focus and stay focused.
-You have to play when you want to play poker. Dont play cuz your board.
-If you are playing on-line play where there are no distractions.
-You have to show the table you are playing your “A” game. Get a good “table image”. This is very important.
-You must be ready to fold a lot of hands. Good winning poker players see the flop about 30% of there hands.
-You have to analize each hand and learn why, when and how come you won or lost that hand.
A patient mind as the correct tactic is often to fold and you just got to wait until you get a hand worth playing. In games with many players you should expect to fold nearly every hand. And even in games with less players you should usually fold about half the hands, so patience is important.
I play in real cash games and win roughly 8 nights out of every 10.
you should go to the tables where the stakes are higher cuz I guarantee you will not be playing loosy goosy and then you will make better moves and others will take you more seriously!!
That’s the challenge. Even the best make bad decisions sometimes. The fewer you make, the better you are. Every poker player out there is trying to hold the right state of mind.
