I used to work for a bookmaker and the only people who won were the ones who only had a bet every now and again because they had some inside information or were particularly good at studying the form and only bet when they were convinced a horse was going to win, in short, pick your bets very carefully and bet big rather than trying to pick out lots of winners with smaller stakes.
It is also my opinion that the better the race the better the form stands up, so if you stick to the better horses you may have more luck, but that is just a personal opinion and others may disagree.
If you are just starting poker, start with very small stakes or for fun either with friends or on one of the internet sites until you get used to the strength of any given hands against the probability of someone else at the table having a stronger hand, obviously the more people there are at the table the stronger the hand needs to be to be likely to winning, also you need to work out the value of any given bet, that is the amount you are wagering against the likelihood you will win the pot and how big the pot is likely to be, a bit like odds in horse-racing (risk versus reward), then start introducing bluffing in to your game and trying to tell when others might be bluffing and then start introducing strategies based on past hands you have played, obviously the more hands you play the more experience you will have to draw on.
Remember it is all about percentages and probability at the end of the day as well as a little instinct and the more you play the better you will get. I would also advise you that the more money you play for the better the players will tend to be so try to find a level you are comfortable at and more imporatntly have a chance at winning at and don't try to move up a level until you are ready.
Also freeroll or small stake tournaments are a good starting point, there are thousands of them on the internet every day and they will give you experience as well as seeing how others try to win, they're also great fun. Try Pacific Poker or Party Poker but there are lots of others and i'm sure you will find one you like. good luck.

With all forms of gambling there is always a certain amount of luck involved. With horse racing it does help to KNOW about the horses running. Study the form as deeply as you can, but this can never give you a guaranteed winner. Also never do multiple bets such as yankees or hienz. Stick to single bets. Bookies hate nothing more than big bets 'on the nose'.
With poker it all comes down to practice. Learn the odds and have fun.

I don't profess to being a top notch gambler, but the thing I have found with horse racing is that if you spend the time doing your homework you stand a better chance of winning. Look at how the horse performs in various conditions eg. the going and the size of the field. Ultimately though the horses is more down to luck than anything else.
Poker is a game of chance not luck. Depending on the version you are playing depends on whether you are reliant on the cards or your talents, but either way you need to see a chance and take it. Remember the adage "if you can't see a mug (easy target to pick on) at the table, its because its you".

In poker you can have strategies and plays. Add in the pschological factor and you can learn to read and play the other players. Its focus is less about the card but about how you play.
With horses, don't bother, its an industry designed to make you lose. Too many variables outside of logical reasoning, and you don;t know if they are being manipulated. You can learn everything about a race, the course, the horses and riders, and form and still there is NO way of getting a good idea of who will win. The only way to win more often than lose is by insdier tips! How the hell can they be more relaible than tons of research?
You answer that question yourself and stick to poker, you have loads more hance of winning, and its how you play. Not like horses where you pick ahorse, spend your money and just wait. You cannot influence anything.
You can win at poker without a good hand, because you can influence the result.

you need to first know how to play the game and then you need to play it for a few years to gain experiance then i have found the best way to make money is either in a low entry no limit cash game or in a sit and go tourney!? remember to walk away when your winning and never chase your loses!

I have been playing poker and betting on horses for over 25 years. I believe it is mostly luck. No sure way to win. You win some but lose more. You can learn to be a good poker player but still need luck to win. You can study the horses but the best looking ones seldom win.
