Most poker experts say that two aces are the best two cards you can have in a game of poker. You can expect to pick up aces once in 220 hands or so. If you pit two aces against any random two cards and then turn over the five community cards, the aces will still make the best hand 80% of the time in most cases. Since your edge against most opponents is usually very thin, if you get an opportunity to risk all your chips in one hand against a single opponent with an 80% chance of doubling up, then you almost always should be willing to take that chance.
While aces is an incredibly powerful starting hand, each additional opponent that takes the flop with you will decrease your chances of winning the hand. Against two opponents, the aces might only be 60% to win and against three opponents we are getting into coin flip territory. This is why it is usually wrong to be sneaky with aces by not raising the bet. We raise the bet with aces to thin the field so that we are up only against one or two opponents and give ourselves a good chance of winning the hand.
Two kings can be played similar to aces but if you do have kings and an opponent has a hand such as ace king, he will pair his ace among the five community cards about 30% of the time, busting you. 70% is still a nice win rate for you but not quite as cozy as the 80% or more that aces gives you. You can also expect to pick up two kings once every 220 or so hands.
Two queens is also a powerful hand but if the community cards spike a king or an ace, that can spell trouble for you since it could give one of your opponents a bigger pair. A fairly common all in match up is two queens against ace king. Since ace king will pair by the river card only 45% of the time, any pair is favored to win against ace king. Two queens will win against ace king about 55% of the time. Again, you will pick up two queens once every 220 or so hands.
Hands such as ace king or smaller pairs should also be played but if ace king doesn't pair or the small pairs don't improve to three of a kind, you will usually be better off discarding the hand against the competition at the local bar.
Hands like ace queen, ace jack, and ace ten, and king queen can also be played but not for very big pots. If you get involved in a big pot with one of these you will usually be beat.
Many hands can be considered speculative hands such as suited connectors like 7 8 of clubs, 9 10 of hearts, etc. Speculative hands should be played when you can do so at a reasonable price since they are long shots to improve but when you do connect with them to make straights or flushes, you can win a big pot.
Most other hands should be considered garbage hands. Even hands like ace seven are garbage because when you pair that ace, it tends to get outkicked by someone else's ace with a bigger kicker card. Garbage hands should be thrown away.
If you sit at a table with nine or ten players you must not play too tightly nor too loosely. Veer to one extreme or the other and you will not be a winning player. Tight players play only 10% of their starting cards and throw the rest away. Loose players play 30% or more of their starting cards. The toughest players play about 20% of their starting cards. Of that 20%, 10% are premium starting hands and the other 10% are speculative hands that are played when the price to play them is reasonable. For new players, throwing away 80% of your cards is hard to do but remember that poker is a high card game. The hands that hold up usually have high cards. Sometimes you will throw away a hand that would have turned into a monster and sometimes you will have a monster hand that will be beat by an even bigger hand. These frustrations can be overwhelming and it takes a lot of study and table experience to be able to handle these frustrations.
Hope this helps and good luck in your tourney!
