1. Discipline – Without discipline you’ll become easy prey at the tables. Part of your strategy should be mucking trash hands before the flop. Too many players are willing to “to pay to see the flop.” They get involved in hands they had absolutely no business playing.
Texas Holdem Strategy #1: Learn the “art of the fold.” Fold TRASH hands pre-flop.
2. Attitude – Napoleon Hill said, “If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think you dare not, don’t. If you like to win, but you think you can’t, it is almost certain you won’t.”
Texas Holdem strategy #2: Have a positive attitude. Focus on winning.
3. Patience – Annie Duke said, “Good poker players are boring poker players.” Televised poker has spoiled us. TV makes us think we’ve got to always be a part of the action. What TV doesn’t show is the countless hands that Daniel Negreanu or Gus Hansen folded.
You might be at a table folding your first 15-20 hands. Boring! Don’t get impatient just to get some action.

What a great age to start playing poker. I’m envious!
Read all the books you can, and study hard in school (especially math classes, and if you can take a statistics class, do it!). Get yourself mentally prepared for the game, and when you come of age, you’ll take the casino by storm.
Of course, play with your friends as much as you can, but study the game as much as you can. Don’t do all your learning from watching crap poker like WPT or WSOP on television. Those shows don’t teach you anything except going all in. You’re giving yourself a 5 or 8 year head start that most players don’t have. That’s a huge advantage, and poker is all about advantages.
Know when to fold when you are beat (like letting go of pocket aces on a coordinated board)
Learn how much you should bet to manipulate pot odds
Know how to capitilize on position.The later the better. You get ALOT more info. Let me give you an example Thats say you hold KJ utg (first person to act preflop). Its a 1/2 game and you raise it to 6 (normal raise preflop). You get raised to 20 by someone on the button. What do you do?? Well you arent ahead of anything that reraises and maybe even money with pocket 10s and lower. You are down big time against any Ace with a jack kicker and higher and you are still down versus any ace. You are down big time against any pocketpair higher than pocket 10’s and against any king (KQ-KK). But you decide that since you have a king you want to call. The flop comes out K42. You bet 20 into a pot of 26. He calls. Now you decide that since he just called he is weak. You bet the 60 into 66. He reraises you allin now. You lost half your stack on a hand that can hardly beat anything good. You are forced to fold now. (You should have folded preflop and stopped betting after the flop is done) However if you had position you probaly would have saved at least 60 dollars on the turn. Calling on the button with KJ isnt a bad move and calling the flop when the king came out wasnt bad (maYBe a raise to get information would be better) However, when he bet 60 you should probaly fold because as i said kj isnt too great a hand. Anways position gives you a whole bunch more of information. The worse the hand the better position you need ! Also kickers matter very much. You would think that a jack is a great kicker. However, if you raise rarely are you going to get called or raised again by somone with a smaller kicker.
Know how to play suited connectors
Know how to bluff and semibluff
Know when to slowplay and when to just bet
80% of the time you need to be agressive and bet
Know your pot odds
Know your oppenents and their tells (betting and facial)
Once you get the feel of the game, start varying your play.(like raising with suited connectors or trash hands like 7,10)
