I’m going to a sketchy poker game tomorrow which I can’t get out of, don’t ask why. I have a feeling players at the table will be sharing signs and was wondering if there was anything in particular I should be looking for. Also, assuming I can’t prove people are sharing signs would there be a strategy to beat them such as playing shitty hands and hope to get cards on the flop? Right now my best plan is to buy out if I lose half my money.

1One of the more common signal techniques is the placement of a marker on top of a live hand. The position is the signal, near the top, the bottom, the right or left, This can also be an indicator the player is going to fold or has a poor hand, or is planning on raising and has a strong hand. Watch for this and you can pick it up and use it. Also watch for how the chips used for betting are selected. Some players will communicate by using certain chip combinations in their bets, such as 4 greens instead of a black.
Play tight, very tight, and do not raise unless you have the hand locked for certain.

2You can also take this concept a step further and use it even more proactively. If you see other people behave a certain way when they have a great hand, you may find it beneficial to exert that same behavior on purpose when you’re heads-up against that player and want to bluff him/her out. It’s a sneaky way of using that person’s own physiological response to feed them false information. Just make sure you aren’t too obvious about it, or the other player will catch you. I find it works best as a subconscious signal that alters their intuitive feeling about the hand.

3It’s difficult to catch cheats at poker. They signal by coughing lightly to holding cards with the left or right hand or by talking in codes. At least you took the first step of extra caution. If things do not work out bail out at the first opportunity. Remember to cut the deck cleanly and stack the deck at least to prevent amateur cheats doing easy card arrangement.

4If you’re playing Hold’em, never sit in a position where a player that you suspect may know another player at the table where one player is Under the Gun and You’re on the Blinds and the other player is on the cutoff or button. You will always find yourself squeezed and they can control the pot and you.

5I agree with ame. Be most cautious and aware of the deck of cards.
If they are giving signals, they do have an edge over you, but they still can’t tell what YOUR cards are. Play ultra-tight and you might be fine.

6Watch betting patterns of certain persons. Someone raising until the end then folding is a dead give away.
