If its a free site then they dont make money or they put advertisements for that, if its site for money they take rake and thats pretty profitable

Heres how it works. The free poker site is used to intice you to go to the pay site. The philosophy is that once you feel like your getting good, you are gonna want to get paid real cash for winning. Then, like the other poster stated, they take their rake.

Either they make their money from advertising, or from a rake.
Rake = before the pot is given to the winner, a percentage of it is taken off the top and given to the house.
If five people bet $10 each, the winner might only get $48 back. The other $2 was the fee for using the service.
