You can, of course, sign up with the “.Nets” and freeroll your way to some sort of prize through thousands of people.
Also, you can open a “.Com” account with most major poker sites and freeroll a few cents here or there or get through ten thousand people to win a seat at another large tournament for a few dollars.
If you watch poker on TV, then you’ve probably already downloaded their software. Pokerstars, AbsolutePoker, FullTiltPoker, NewBodog, etc.
For “traditional timewaster” freerolls, at the moment I prefer the NewBodog 9:40PM $0+$0 with $1 rebuys and addons. The field is large, and it takes until 2AM to cash, but it feels great to consistently cash in a rebuy tournament without doing so, even if it’s only 20-30% and making only about 25ยข an hour.
If you want small tournaments (hundreds, with tournaments throughout the day) that are free and you can win money, here are some options:
NLOP.com* – National League of Poker – A free 12 week seasonal online league. You get points for daily log in, sit and gos, and the top 100 each week get in a big tournament for the weekly prize. Cash games scheduled around the clock.
*= I have my own “skin” I am working on if anyone is interested, GoPrize.com… Some day I hope to add tournaments and extra goodies.. NLOP is the backbone though.
BetZip.com* – A “U.S. Legal” membership-based poker tournament site that charges $19.99/month with a FREE membership level that doesn’t expire. They will nag you to upgrade, but unless you spend time there enough to win way more than $20/month, it’s not worth it. Tournament sizes for “open to Free Membership” range from a few hundred to over a thousand and only pay about $10 to the winner.
*There are sites out there for free 2-week memberships.. Make sure you cancel explicitly if you do it..
Pogo.com – Sixth Street Omaha – Crazy game where winning a hand gets you a letter in OMAHA and spelling the word gets you a Jackpot spin. If you hit the Jackpot (chances are slim to none) you get a nice chunk of change.. If you take the free two week trial, you can play the Members-only Texas Hold’em, with similar rules….
